History
The U.S. Mint was established in 1792 by Congress under the Coinage Act. Congress chose Philadelphia, then the nation's capital, as the location for the first U.S. Mint. As the gold rush spread across the United States, mint branches and assay offices opened in other cities. It was one of the first federal agencies to hire women, as early as 1795. Women held the second highest position at the Mint even before they had the right to vote.
