Gold $10 American Eagle Liberty Head 1879
The American Eagle Liberty Head was minted by the U.S. Mint between 1838 and 1907, weighing 16.7 grams and containing less than half a troy ounce of 0.4837 (15.044 g) fine gold.
Theobverse depicts a portrait of Liberty looking to the left with a crown on her head, bearing the inscription "LIBERTY". The Eagle Liberty Head was designed by engraver Christian Gobrecht, who was inspired by Benjamin West's famous painting Omnia Vincit Amor (Love Conquers All). The reverse side depicts a very naturalistic eagle with a shield over its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The motto "In God We Trust" has been placed above the eagle since 1866. The motif is surrounded by the inscriptions "TEN D" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".
These gold coins are rarely acquired and are therefore highly sought after by collectors and investors.
