Famous golden American Double Eagle Liberty Head - 1896
The American Double Eagle Liberty Head was minted by the US Mint (No mint mark - Philadelphia, O - New Orleans, CC - Carson City, S - San Francisco, D - Denver) from 22 carat gold between 1850 and 1907, weighing 33.4360 grams and containing less than one troy ounce (0.9675 oz - 30.0926 g) of pure gold, the rest being traditionally copper. These gold coins are very rarely obtained and are therefore highly sought after by collectors and investors!
Prior to 1850, the $10 American Eagle gold coins were the largest denomination in the U.S., but since the U.S. Mint began issuing these gold coins in $20 denominations, these eagles have come to be known worldwide as the "Double Eagle".
The American Double Eagle Liberty Head gold coins are divided into three groups:
Type I. 1850-1866, Type II. 1866-1876, Type III. 1877-1907.
The motto "In God We Trust, " placed above the eagle, was chosen only for the Type II and Type III coins issued in 1866-1907. The denomination is marked "TWENTY D." for Type I and Type II coins issued between 1850 and 1876 or "TWENTY DOLLARS" for Type III coins issued between 1877 and 1907. The Double Eagle Liberty Head was designed by engraver James B. Longacre. The obverse features a portrait of Liberty looking to the left with a crown on her head, bearing the inscription "LIBERTY". The reverse design of the eagle depicts the classic Great Seal of the United States of America.
