Detailed description
The Great Greek Mythology series
The Polish Mint XXI comes up with the most extensive series of The Great Greek Mythology yet. The issue of this unique series is planned for 4 years and will offer a total of 36 silver selectively gilded coins in 3 different sizes. The individual coins will introduce us to the most famous figures of Greek mythology, worked down to the smallest detail thanks to the high relief design.
The ancient Greeks believed that gods had the same qualities and emotions as mortals. This is probably why Greek legends are so popular and contain a huge number of stories. In them, the gods act like humans, they can be noble or vengeful, deceitful or honest. They can love and hate, envy and wish, feel anger and joy.
Each silver coin tells a fascinating story about the gods, heroes and mythical creatures of ancient Olympus.
Orpheus
An exclusive gold-plated silver coin issued by the State of Cameroon for 2023, weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g) in purity of the purest 99.9% silver with an Antique Standard finish, this coin is part of the "Great Greek Mythology" series and features the enchanting poet and musician Orpheus.
The reverse of the coin depicts the singer Orpheus in detail playing the lyre, which is selectively gold plated. The musician sits surrounded by a lion, a stag and flying birds. His grimace depicts the pain of losing a loved one. The coin's background and rim are decorated with a typical Greek design. In the left part of the coin the name "ORFEUS" is written in large letters.
Orpheus was the greatest musician and singer in Greek mythology, famous for his singing, which enchanted people, captivated and soothed animals and birds, and calmed nature. He was the son of the goddess Calliope and the god Apollo. He could play and sing so beautifully that even the Sirens turned pale with envy. Orpheus became famous for his love of the nymph Eurydice. When Eurydice died, Orpheus went to the underworld to get her back. He played his lyre so beautifully that he managed to reach the ruler of the underworld, Hades, who allowed him to take Eurydice back to the world of the living. However, with the understanding that he would have to go before her and not be allowed to see her until they were on the surface. Orpheus, however, could not resist and took a last look at Eurydice, but she immediately returned to the underworld and Orpheus was left alone.
The obverse depicts the Temple of Zeus in ancient Olympia, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The year of issue is inscribed above the upper part of the wreath and the purity of the coin at the bottom. The rim of the coin is decorated with a typical Greek design with the inscription 'REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN', the face value, year of issue and weight. Two ancient columns intersect the centre of the rim.
The coin is supplied in a luxury box with a certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world!
