Detailed description
The Great Greek Mythology series
The Polish Mint XXI is launching the largest series of The Great Greek Mythology to date. This unique series is planned to be issued over 4 years and will offer a total of 36 silver coins selectively gilded in 3 different sizes. The individual coins will introduce us to the most famous figures of Greek mythology, worked down to the smallest detail thanks to the high relief design.
The ancient Greeks believed that gods had the same qualities and emotions as mortals. This is probably why Greek legends are so popular and contain a huge number of stories. In them, the gods act like humans, they can be noble or vengeful, deceitful or honest. They can love and hate, envy and wish, feel anger and joy.
Each silver coin tells a fascinating story about the gods, heroes and mythical creatures of ancient Olympus.
Prometheus
An exclusive gold-plated silver coin, issued by the State of Cameroon for 2023 in high relief weighing 3 Oz (93.3 g) in the purest 99.9% silver with Antique Standard finish, is part of the "Great Greek Mythology" series and features the creator of man, Prometheus.
The reverse side of the coin depicts Prometheus dressed in a robe with a decorative clasp. In his hands he holds the precious flame of fire that he brought to humans. The bottom of the coin depicts figures gratefully extending their hands to Prometheus. There is also a depiction of an eagle holding the chain with which Prometheus was chained to the rock. The background is decorated with Greek mosaics, while the circle is dotted with small fires. At the bottom of the coin is the name 'PROMETHEUS'.
Prometheus was a Titan in Greek mythology, the son of Iapetus and Themis. According to legend, he created a man out of clay. The cunning and philanthropic hero angered the supreme god Zeus, who wanted people to worship the gods and make sacrifices to them. Prometheus told him to come and choose, hiding flesh under one skin and bones under the other. Zeus chose the pile of bones and became angry. For Prometheus's insolence, he took fire from the people and told them to eat the meat, but raw. The protector felt sorry for the people when he saw them huddling in the cold and eating cold and decided to steal the fire from the gods. For this act, Zeus decided to punish Prometheus for 30,000 long years. He had him chained to the rocks of the Caucasus, where an eagle flew in every day to feed on Prometheus' liver, which always grew fat overnight.
The obverse depicts the temple of Zeus in ancient Olympia surrounded by a laurel wreath. The year of issue is inscribed above the upper part of the wreath and the purity of the coin at the bottom. The rim of the coin is decorated with a typical Greek design with the inscription "REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN", the denomination, year of issue and weight. Two ancient columns intersect the centre of the rim.
The coin comes in a luxury wooden box with a certificate of authenticity, limited to 333 pieces for the whole world!
