Detailed description
The Great Greek Mythology series
The Polish Mint XXI comes up with the most extensive series of The Great Greek Mythology yet. The issue of this unique series is planned for 4 years and will offer a total of 36 silver selectively gilded coins in 3 different sizes. The individual coins will present us the most famous figures of Greek mythology, processed to the smallest detail thanks to the high relief design.
The ancient Greeks believed that gods had the same qualities and emotions as mortals. This is probably why Greek myths are so popular and contain a huge number of stories. In them, the gods act like humans and can be noble or vengeful, deceitful or honest. They can love and hate, envy and wish, feel anger and joy.
Each silver coin tells a fascinating story about the gods, heroes and mythical creatures of ancient Olympus.
Cyclops
An exclusive gold-plated silver coin issued by the State of Cameroon for 2022 weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g) in the finest 99.9% purest silver with an Antique Standard finish, this coin is part of the new "Great Greek Mythology" series and features the one-eyed giant Cyclops.
The reverse of the coin depicts the Cyclops in detail, an unusual creature with a huge eye in the middle of its forehead. The giant is clad in armour and holds a partially gilded hammer in his hand, which serves him in battle. His muscular figure is wrapped in chains that flow loosely into the coin's rim. The background behind the figure is decorated with a typical Greek design. The name of the coin "CYCLOPS" is written in large letters at the bottom.
Cyclops are giants with one eye placed in the middle of the forehead. They lived in caves in a land called Hyperia, which is why they were uneducated and brutal. The most famous of the Cyclopes was Polyphemos, who was the son of the god Poseidon. The Cyclopes together sided with the god Zeus when he rebelled against his father Kronos and forged thunder and lightning for him, which enabled him to defeat his father. The giants also made a helmet of invisibility, which they lent to Hades in his battle against the Titans, and a bow and arrows for the goddess Artemis. The Cyclopes eventually killed the god Apollo in revenge for the death of his son Asclepius, who was killed by a lightning bolt made by the Cyclopes.
The obverse depicts the temple of Zeus in ancient Olympia, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The year of issue is inscribed above the upper part of the wreath and the purity of the coin at the bottom. The rim of the coin is decorated with a typical Greek design with the inscription "REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN", the face value, year of issue and weight. Two ancient columns intersect the centre of the rim.
The coin is supplied in a luxury box with a certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world!
