Detailed description
The Great Greek Mythology series
The Polish Mint XXI is launching the largest series of The Great Greek Mythology to date. This unique series is planned to be issued over 4 years and will offer a total of 36 silver coins selectively gilded in 3 different sizes. The individual coins will introduce us to the most famous figures of Greek mythology, worked down to the smallest detail thanks to the high relief design.
The ancient Greeks believed that gods had the same qualities and emotions as mortals. This is probably why Greek legends are so popular and contain a huge number of stories. In them, the gods act like humans, they can be noble or vengeful, deceitful or honest. They can love and hate, envy and wish, feel anger and joy.
Each silver coin tells a fascinating story about the gods, heroes and mythical creatures of ancient Olympus.
Medusa
Issued by the State of Cameroon in 2023, this unique 2 Oz (62.2 g) gold-plated silver coin in the finest 99.9% silver in high relief and Antique Standard finish is part of the "Great Greek Mythology" series and features the terrifying gorgon Medusa.
The coin depicts a winged female creature with a fierce face on its reverse. She has snakes for hair and claws for nails. Its glowing eyes and helmet are selectively gilded. The background of the coin is decorated with a traditional Greek design. In the foreground are the horrified figures of people who have just been blinded by the jellyfish. The rim of the coin is decorated with a fine mosaic and the inscription "MEDUSA" protruding above the surface of the coin.
Medusa was one of the three monstrous Gorgons, the daughter of the sea god Phorkyn and his companion Keto. According to legend, she used to be a beautiful girl with shining hair, but after falling in love with Poseidon, she was punished by the goddess Athena, who turned her hair into snakes and gouged out her eyes. From then on, Medusa had a special power - whoever looked into her eyes immediately turned to stone. Medusa's head was a terrible weapon and therefore she was hunted by heroes such as Perseus and Heracles. After her death, the giant Chrysaor and the winged horse Pégasos sprang from her body. The drops of her blood gave birth to poisonous snakes. Medusa was also known as the protector. The most famous Olympian god Zeus wore an amulet with her head as a talisman to remain powerful and glorious at all times.
The obverse of the coin depicts the Temple of Zeus in ancient Olympia, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Above the top of the wreath is the year of issue, and at the bottom is the purity of the coin. The rim of the coin is decorated with a typical Greek design with the inscription "REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN", the face value, year of issue and weight. Two ancient columns intersect the centre of the rim.
The coin is supplied in a luxury wooden box with a certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world!
