The Shengxiao Collection - Year of the Rat 2020
A 1 oz (31.21 g) gold lunar investment coin issued by the British Royal Mint for the year 2020 in purity of the purest 99.99% gold in a series named after the Chinese zodiac, The Shengxiao Collection is dedicated to the Chinese lunar sign - the Year of the Rat.
The reverse of the coin depicts the seventh motif in the Shēngxiao series, designed by Irish illustrator P.J. Lynch, continuing a series of designs that began with the Year of the Horse. The coin design faithfully depicts a rat amongst the clover blossoms. The rodent turns its head vigilantly in search of food and uses its raised snout to search for hidden dangers in the surroundings. The vivid scene highlights some of the positive qualities of this animal, such as its high intelligence, curiosity, eagerness and adaptability. The background of the coin is covered with a fine decorative engraving of guilloches (Guilloche). The motif is surrounded by the inscriptions "YEAR OF THE RAT 2020" along with the weight, purity and Chinese character for the year of the rat.
The obverse bears the fifth and definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Surrounding it are the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "D'G'REG'F'D", the denomination, and the initials of the artist Jody Clark "JC" below.
