Detailed description

Series "Biblical Art" 2022 - Moses and the Rock

An exclusive gold coin issued by the Bank of Israel in 2022 is dedicated to one of the most famous and mysterious of all biblical stories - Moses and the Rock.

The coin is the twenty-sixth in the world's popular "Biblical Art" series and features Moses holding a staff on its reverse. From the rock behind him flows a spring of life-giving water, which the people scoop into jars.
Moses, chosen by the Lord, led the children of Israel out of Egypt and wandered in the desert. Thanks to Miriam, Moses' older sister, for 40 years their travels were accompanied by a well. But when Miriam died, her well dried up. Fearing they would die of thirst, the people complained to their leaders, Moses and his brother Aaron. God commanded Moses to take his staff, call a meeting with Aaron, and speak to the rock asking for water. However, Moses did not speak to the rock, but struck it twice with his staff. For this he and Aaron were severely punished. After 40 years of total devotion, self-sacrifice, and all the hardships they had experienced together since the exodus from Egypt, they were not to enter Israel with the people. God tells them the reason for the punishment, "By striking the rock and not speaking on it...you did not believe in me to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel..." (Numbers 20:12).
So the story ends tragically for Moses. A year before his death, in the 40th year of his leadership, he accused the people, "God was angry with me also because of you, saying: You shall not come there either" (Deuteronomy 1:37). Thus, Moses and Aaron did not fulfill their dream of entering the Promised Land.

The obverse depicts the national emblem of Israel, which accompanies the coin's title "MOSES AND THE ROCK (Numbers 20: 11)" in the description. The motif on the reverse side refers to a jug of water. Below it, the denomination '10' is accompanied by the currency designation 'NEW SHEKELS', the name of the state 'ISRAEL' and the year of issue '2022'. The inscriptions are in English, Hebrew and Arabic. The mint mark "מ" is included.

The coin comes in a gift box along with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 555 pieces for the whole world!
