Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle 2016
A silver investment coin issued by the Perth Mint in 2016 in the finest 99.9% pure silver, weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g). The Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle motif was launched by the Perth Mint in January 2014 and the design has been updated each year thereafter.
The reverse of the coin depicts the wedge-tailed eagle perched atop a broken branch, looking around the landscape for suitable prey. The motif is surrounded by the inscription 'AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE' and the Perth Mint's mintmark 'P' for issue, weight, purity and mintmark.
The majestic wedge-tailed eagle, found predominantly in Australia, is one of the largest eagle species with a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres. It is easily identified by the specific appearance of its tail feathers, arranged in a wedge shape.
The obverse of the coin traditionally shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadly and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the face value. The coin has the status of Australian legal tender.
