Detailed description
Spherical Coin - Mercury
A uniquely shaped spherical silver coin issued by the State of Barbados in 2022 and minted in the purest 99.9% silver weighing 1 Oz in a precise Antique design, it represents the first planet in sequence from the Sun. In its original miniature design, it depicts the planet Mercury.
The surface of the coin offers a view of the smallest planet in our solar system. The surface of the coin faithfully replicates the actual surface of Mercury, with a large number of impact craters, faults and lava fields. The overall impression is enhanced by the Antique patina finish, which matches the iron dust covering the surface of Mercury.
The stand bears the national emblem of Barbados, which is created by hydrographic printing. Also included are the inscription "BARBADOS", the year of issue divided by tens into two halves, the denomination "5 DOLLARS" and the weight and purity information.
The coin is supplied in a presentation frame, which is inserted in the original paper wrapper, which also serves as a certificate. The mintage of the coin is limited by a number indicating the rounded diameter of the planet in kilometers and is 4,879 pieces for the whole world!
Mercury is named after the Roman god of trade and travel, Mercurius. The earliest records of the planet date back to the time of the ancient Sumerians 5,000 years ago. Mercury is one of the five planets visible from Earth with the naked eye. Because of its proximity to the Sun, there is a short time to observe it at dusk or dawn.
Mercury orbits the Sun in a distinctly elongated elliptical orbit, and its rotational axis has an inclination of only 7°. One year on Mercury lasts 88 days, but one day is equivalent to 176 Earth days.
Beneath the planet's crust is a massive core with a large proportion of iron and nickel. This makes it the second planet after Earth with the highest density. Mercury's surface, with its many craters and lava plains, resembles our moon. The atmosphere is very thin and more like a vacuum. For this reason, no meteorological phenomena occur on the planet and there are considerable differences in temperature. There can be differences of up to 600°C between the illuminated and the averted side.
