Detailed description

Spherical Coin - Uranus

A uniquely shaped silver spherical coin issued by the State of Barbados for 2023 and minted in the purest 99.9% silver weighing 1 Oz in a precise Antique finish, it represents the seventh planet in order from the Sun. In its original scaled-down version, it depicts the planet Uranus.

The surface of the coin offers a glimpse of one of the ice giants of our solar system. The structure of the coin faithfully outlines the unsolid surface of Uranus, whose atmosphere transitions into liquid layers. The overall impression is brought to life by the use of a glossy lacquer in a blue-green hue.

The reverse bears the national emblem of Barbados, which is created by hydrographic printing. Also included are the inscription "BARBADOS", the year of issue divided by tens into two halves, the denomination "5 DOLLARS" and weight and purity information.

The coin comes in a presentation frame, which is inserted in the original paper packaging that also serves as a certificate in a limited edition of 4,999 pieces for the whole world!

Uranus was discovered in 1781 by astronomer and telescope designer William Herschel. It was the first newly discovered planet, unknown to ancient civilizations and later mistaken for a star, observable in good light conditions from Earth. The original name in honour of the English monarch, "King George's Star" (Georgium Sidus), did not catch on worldwide. The now-familiar name after the Greek god of the heavens was coined by German astronomer Johann Bode, who at the same time specified the orbit of Uranus.
Uranus belongs, along with Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune, to a group of planets known as the gas giants, whose core is composed of solid matter and gases. In the case of Uranus and Saturn, they are also ice, placing them in a subgroup of the ice giants. The atmosphere of gas giants contains mostly hydrogen and helium, and these gases intermingle with the planet's non-solid matter. The planet itself thus has no solid boundary, which virtually rules out the presence of living organisms similar to Earth's.
Uranus is the only planet in our solar system that has a rotational axis in the plane of orbit and resembles a rolling ball as it moves around the Sun. Its poles are therefore closer to the Sun than the equatorial region. But for reasons still unknown, the temperature is the same all over the planet, reaching a record -220°C. All scientific knowledge of Uranus comes from a single observation during the Voyager 2 flyby in 1986.
