Detailed description

Spherical Coin - Mars

The uniquely shaped Spherical Silver Coin issued by the State of Barbados in 2021 and minted from the purest 99.9% silver weighing 1 Oz in a precision Antique design is released in the year of the Perseverance probe landing on the surface of the fourth planet of our solar system. It features the planet Mars in an original design that is loosely related to the anniversary coin commemorating man's first step on the moon.

The surface of the coin offers a view of the red planet dotted with impact craters, canyons and volcanoes, dominated by the highest known mountain, Olympus Mons. The overall impression is enhanced by the red colour combined with the patinated surface.

The reverse bears the national emblem of Barbados, which is created by hydrographic printing. Also included are the inscription "BARBADOS", the year of issue divided by tens into two halves, the denomination "5 DOLLARS" and the weight and purity information.

The coin is supplied in a presentation frame, which is inserted into the original paper wrapper, which also serves as a certificate. The mintage of the coin is limited to only 1,999 pieces for the entire world!

The main objective of the US space agency NASA's Mars 2020 mission is to sample rocks on Mars and transport them to Earth.
The Perseverance rover is tasked with the first part of the mission. It will land on the surface of Mars after a seven-month flight on 18 February 2021. Over the course of one Martian year (687 days), Perseverance will search for rocks whose structure has been affected by water and could contain fossils of microorganisms. The samples collected will be placed in 30 hermetically sealed titanium cases. The mission will also include sending back images and measured data. For example, data on the Martian atmosphere could be crucial in planning the eventual colonisation of the planet. In the second part of the mission, scheduled for 2026 at the earliest, another spacecraft will pick up the transport cases. If successful, it will be the first spacecraft in human history to successfully launch from another planet. In Mars orbit, the cargo will be handed over to a third probe, which will deliver it to Earth.
