The exclusive silver coin issued by the island state of Tokelau and minted by the Bratislava Mint Pressburg Mint in 2020 in Proof like quality and purity of the purest 99.9% silver, weighing 1 Oz (31.3 g), illustrates the meaning of the word icon in a broader sense.
The reverse side of the coin depicts a stylized head of the goddess Diana by American neoclassical sculptor Hiram Powers (1805-1873). The image incorporates a geometric texture that houses the inscription "ICON" divided into two lines. A traditional Greek pattern forms the circumference of the coin.
The word icon comes from the Greek word EIKON and means image. The word today no longer denotes only a religious image of the Orthodox Church, but is used for a variety of other figurative meanings. A famous person may be characterized as an icon, or adding the attribute iconic to the name of an object will emphasize its importance and significance.
The obverse bears a portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley and the year of issue "2020" divided into tens. Around the perimeter of the coin are the inscriptions " TOKELAU", "5 DOLLARS", "1 OZ FINE SILVER" and "ELIZABETH II", complemented by two Maori koru symbols. The background of the coin consists of an undulating pattern framed by a circle decorated with a Greek design.
The coin comes in a plastic capsule in a limited edition of only 30,000 pieces for the whole world!
