Wildlife in the Moonlight: Lioness
This exclusive gold-plated silver coin, minted in 2021 and weighing 2 Oz (62.2 g) in the finest 99.9% pure silver with Antique Standard finish, is part of the Wildlife In The Moonlight series, which captures wildlife by moonlight in an original way. The third coin in the series features a lioness (Panthera leo).
The reverse design depicts the lioness as an elegant beast in the middle of a moonlit night. The female is resting on a tree trunk, yet she keeps a watchful eye on her surroundings for possible prey. The stylishly clean motif is accentuated by the embossing and elaborate details that can be seen on the animal's body and surrounding environment. The perception of the beauty of the wilderness is enhanced by the selectively gilded full moon. The motif is complemented by the name of the lioness in English "LIONESS" and Latin "PANTHERA LEO".
The lion is a mammal of the Felidae family and the second largest feline after the tiger. In the wild, lions live to be 10-14 years old, but in captivity they can live to be 20 years old. Lion populations used to be widespread throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and even America, but today they are found only in Africa and a few places in India. There is a marked sexual dimorphism in lions, with the main and defining feature of male lions being their manes. At maturity, young males are forced to leave the pride into which they were born. The lionesses stay unless they leave with a new mate.
The obverse bears the traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE", the denomination, purity, year of issue and weight.
The coin comes in a gift box with a certificate of authenticity, limited to only 500 pieces worldwide.
