The Queen´s Beasts - Yale Beaufort - 1/4 Oz
The 1/4 Oz (7.78 g) gold investment coin in purity of the purest 99.99% gold issued by the Royal British Mint in 2019 is the seventh coin in the "The Queen's Beasts" series, which is dedicated to the ten heraldic animals of Queen Elizabeth II - the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III., Falcon of the Plantagenets, Black Bull of the Dukes of Clarence, Yale Beaufort, White Lion of Mortimer, White Hound of Richmond, Red Dragon of Wales, Unicorn of Scotland and White Horse of Hanover.
The reverse of the coin depicts Yale, the mythical beast that holds the coat of arms of Lady Margaret Baufort - a shield divided in half with a trapdoor and crown in the centre. The rim is decorated with the inscription "YALE OF BEAUFORT", the weight "1/4 oz", the fineness "FINE GOLD, 999.9", the year of issue "2019" and the initials of the designer "JC".
The Queen's Beasts is a series of ten sculptures created by sculptor James Woodford to commemorate the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. Their stylized form for the coin series was created by the talented engraver Jody Clark.
The Yale is a mythical beast that is described as being similar to an antelope or goat, the size of a hippopotamus, with the tail of an elephant and the jaws of a boar. The Yale of Beaufort has white and gold coloration and curled horns. The Yale as a heraldic badge was inherited by Henry VII from his mother, Lady Margaret of Beaufort. She played a central role in the War of the Roses and her position as head of the Tudor dynasty's matriarchy gave the animal prestige and symbolic meaning - elegance, determination and strength.
The obverse depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fifth and definitive coin portrait of the Queen. This is followed by the artist's initials "J.C.", the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II. D.G. REG.F.D." and the face value.
