Detailed description
The Queen´s Beasts - Plantagenet Falcon - 1/4 Oz
The 1/4 Oz (7.78 g) gold investment coin in purity of the purest 99.99% gold issued by the Royal British Mint in 2019 is the sixth coin in the "The Queen's Beasts" series, which is dedicated to the ten heraldic animals of Queen Elizabeth II - the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III., Falcon of the Plantagenets, Black Bull of the Dukes of Clarence, Yale Beaufort, White Lion of Mortimer, White Hound of Richmond, Red Dragon of Wales, Unicorn of Scotland and White Horse of Hanover.
The coin bears on its reverse the motif of a white falcon holding in its talons an armorial shield, which depicts another white falcon in an open padlock. The falcon and padlock were important emblems of the House of York and Lancaster. If the lock was depicted as open, it symbolized a claim to the English throne. The rim of the motif is decorated with the inscription "FALCON OF PLANTAGENETS", details of weight, fineness, year of issue and the initials of the designer "JC".
The Queen's Beasts is a series of ten heraldic sculptures created by sculptor James Woodford to mark the Queen's coronation in 1953. Their stylized form for the coin series was created by the talented engraver Jody Clark.
The kings of the Plantagenet dynasty ruled England from the time of Henry II (1154-1189) and through the Lancester and York branches until the reign of Richard III and defeat at the Battle of Bosworth (1485), when they were replaced by the Tudors. In heraldry, the falcon is associated with the embodiment of determination and unwavering concentration. Originally the falcon emblem was associated with Edward III, who passed it on in association with the open castle to his grandson Edward IV, an important figure in the Wars of the Roses and the first English king of the House of York.
The obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the fifth and definitive coin portrait of the Queen. It is followed by the artist's initials "J.C.", the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II. D.G. REG.F.D." and the face value.
