The Royal Mint Valiant - 10 Oz
The 10 Oz (311g) silver investment coin in the finest 99.99% pure silver, issued by the Royal Mint for 2018, is dedicated to one of England's most famous legends of St George and the Dragon, and the coin's name, Valiant, recalls the bravery of this historical figure.
On its reverse, the coin bears a scene from the classic legend, reworked by sculptor Etienne Millner, of St George on horseback delivering a fatal blow to the dragon with his spear. This is the first coin from The Royal Mint to combine engraved and matte elements. A fine decorative engraving, the guilloche, is used for the background of the coin, giving depth and uniqueness to the whole motif. The year of issue "2018" is indicated at the bottom edge of the coin, and the weight "10 oz" and fineness "FINE SILVER 999.9" are broken into four lines at the top right.
St. George was a Roman soldier living in the 3rd century in what is now Turkey, and was tortured and executed by beheading for his Christian beliefs. He was subsequently venerated as a martyr and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The legend of St. George and the dragon was brought to Europe by the Crusaders and reworked into a romantic form.
The obverse, against a background of a finely engraved guilloche design, shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the inscription '10 POUNDS'.
