The Royal Mint Valiant 2021 - 10 Oz
The 10 Oz (311g) silver investment coin in the finest 99.99% pure silver, issued by the Royal Mint for 2021, is dedicated to one of England's most famous legends of St George and the Dragon, and the coin's name, Valiant, recalls the bravery of this historical figure.
On its reverse, the coin bears a scene from the classic legend newly rendered by sculptor Etienne Millner. St. George on horseback strikes a fatal blow to the dragon with his spear. The design of the coin combines engraved and matt elements. A fine decorative guilloche engraving is used for the background of the coin's interior, which adds depth and uniqueness to the whole motif. The main motif partially extends into the rim of the coin, which is complemented by the year of issue "2021" in the lower part and the weight and fineness "10 oz FINE SILVER 999.9" in the upper part.
St. George was a Roman soldier living in the 3rd century in what is now Turkey. He was tortured and executed by beheading for his Christian faith. He was subsequently venerated as a martyr and one of the fourteen Holy Helpers. The legend of St. George and the dragon was brought to Europe by the Crusaders and gradually reworked into its present romantic form.
The obverse, against a background of a finely engraved guilloche design, shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription 'ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the inscription '10 POUNDS'.
