The reverse of the coin depicts a male brown emu caring for his young amongst the sparse vegetation of the Australian steppe. The motif is an image of the devotion and vigilance of fathers who do not abandon their offspring for months after birth. The Australian emu (brown emu - Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the largest non-flying bird species in Australia. It is second only to the two-toed ostrich, found in sub-Saharan Africa, in global comparisons. The emu is found in small flocks throughout most of the Australian continent. At the time of breeding, paired individuals divide up the task of raising their young. The male builds the nest and the female lays an average of about 10 eggs. Subsequent care is entirely up to the male. Sitting continuously on the eggs, he takes almost no food or fluids and is just as caring after the offspring hatch. During this period he is very aggressive towards his surroundings.
Emus are omnivores, but berries and seeds form the bulk of their diet. They use their stunted wings to keep cool during the heat of the sun. An excellent runner, they can reach speeds of up to 48 km/h. In the wild, it lives to be about ten years old, but in captivity it can live up to 35 years.

The face shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the initials "JC". The name "ELIZABETH II", the years of reign of the monarch "1952 - 2022", the name of the state "AUSTRALIA", the year of issue "2023" and the face value complete the portrait on the rim. The coin has the status of Australian legal tender under the Monetary Act 1965.
