Detailed description
Vivat Humanitas 2020 - Brilliant Uncirculated
An exclusive silver coin issued by the island state of Tokelau and minted by the Bratislava Mint Pressburg Mint in 2020 in top quality Brilliant Uncirculated in the purest 99.9% silver with a weight of 1 Oz (31.3 g) is released as part of the Vivat Humanitas series, which celebrates the idea of humanity as a carrier of progress despite all conflicts and cultural differences. The first coin in the series commemorates one of our developmental milestones - the emergence of writing.
The motif on the reverse of the coin works with the systems of extinct writing and signs of ancient cultures. The background consists of two interlocking squares that overlap at a 45° angle. The points of the diamond contain the Sumerian cuneiform character ki (Earth), the ancient Chinese character rén (man), the Egyptian hieroglyph Bâ (soul), and the Mayan pictorial character tz'ib (writing). The centre consists of a spatially rasterised circle, which is complemented by a stylised sun and the Eye of Horus, the ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royalty and health. The inner circle contains the inscription "VIVAT HUMANITAS" (Latin for Long Live Humanity) and the year of issue "2020".
The written record of speech is a unique ability that only humans have mastered on our Earth. The need to preserve and convey information led ancient cultures to the gradual emergence of writing. From simple pictures, pictograms or murals, systems of signs evolved independently to compose words and sentences. The method of writing varied according to the region where it originated. The earliest writing was carved in stone, carved in wood and bone, pressed into clay tablets or written on papyrus.
The obverse of the coin shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain by Ian-Rank Broadley with the artist's initials. The inner circle of the portrait contains the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and TOKELAU". The outer rim records examples of ancient writing, the denomination '5 DOLLARS' and details of weight and purity.
