Detailed description
5 Kg Silver Coin - The Dance Screen (The Scream Too)
Following the tremendous success of the first three coins, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, Emily Carr Tsatsisnukomi and National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, the Royal Canadian Mint has released its fourth silver coin exclusively for 2015, weighing 5 Kg and measuring 180 mm in absolute purity of the purest 99.99% silver in top proof quality, dedicated to the salmon wild in the seas around Northwest Canada, whose numbers have declined dramatically in recent years.
The reverse of the coin features a detailed engraving of The Dance Screen (The Scream Too) in very high relief.
The Dance Screen is a monumental sculpture of red cedar, carved in the artistic style of the Haida Indigenous people of Canada. The sculpture measures three metres in height, five metres in diameter and weighs about 1,360 kg. The ambitious project was made by carver James Hart, and features dance props that were traditionally used during Haida ceremonial dances.
The individual parts on the motif depict the following characters: the Beaver and Raven, the Bear and Bear Cub, the Eagle and Frogs, the Orca, the Salmon and the Shaman.
The motif is complemented by the inscription "CANADA" and the author's initials "JH". The obverse depicts a traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II , by Susanna Blunt, the inscriptions Elizabeth II, D.G. REGINA, the denomination, year of issue, weight and purity, against a background of embossed texture.
James Hart
Renowned Haida master carver and " Eagle Clan Chief" James Hart inherited his artistic talent and his status from his mother's lineage. His great-grandfather was the famous carver and chief Charles Edenshaw, whose early twentieth century work is present in many museum collections. Hart chose his art direction in 1970 when he began studying under famed artists Robert Davidson and Bill Reid. Today, Hart's sought-after works are exhibited across Canada as well as internationally.
Each coin comes in a deluxe walnut wood gift box in an acrylic glass presentation display along with a numbered and illustrated certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 100 pieces for the entire world!
