Exclusively for 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint is releasing its first beautifully crafted 5 Kg silver coin in absolute finest purity of 99.99% silver in top proof quality, dedicated to the masterpiece by Bill Reid, one of Canada's most important artists, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii.
The reverse of the coin depicts a meticulously engraved Haida canoe motif on which thirteen powerful figures, drawn primarily from the myth of the Haida Gwaii Archipelago itself, float. Bill Reid has alluded to the universal symbolism of this boat, which contains, as it were, the point of life, conflict and peace, body and spirit locked in eternal struggle on a journey that heads ever onward to an unknown and perhaps unknowable destination. The inscriptions "CANADA", "BILL REID", "1920-1998" follow. The obverse depicts a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Each coin comes in a deluxe walnut wood gift box in an acrylic glass presentation display along with a numbered and illustrated certificate of authenticity (portrait of Bill Reid, several artistic photographs) in a limited edition of only 100 pieces for the entire world!
