5 Kg Silver Coin - Argillite Chest

Following the huge success of the 5 Kg silver coin The Dance Screen (The Scream Too), the Royal Canadian Mint is releasing its fifth silver coin exclusively for 2016, weighing 5 Kg and measuring 180 mm in diameter in absolute purity of the purest 99.99% silver in top proof quality, dedicated to the unique Haida Art style "Argillite Chest" opal chest by artist and carver Charles Edenshaw,stribrna_mince_5_kg_charles_edenshaw_argillite_chest_2016_proofwhose early twentieth century work is present in many museum collections.

The reverse of the coin shows a detailed motif engraved in very high relief - the central figure of the "Argillite Chest" ashlar chest - a lion with human hair nose and chin. Two human hands flank the face that emerges from the cave. The background is decorated with ornaments characteristic of Haida art. At the bottom is the inscription 'CANADA'. In designing the coin, the Royal Canadian Mint invited renowned Haida master carver and recipient of the honorary title of "Eagle Clan Chief" James Hart, who is the great-great-grandson of Charles Edenshaw. Opuka is a rock formed from the finest particles deposited on the seabed. Its properties are similar to slate, making it well suited for carving. It was an important commodity among European buyers in the nineteenth century.

The obverse depicts a traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, by Susanna Blunt, the inscriptions Elizabeth II, D.G. REGINA, the denomination, year of issue, weight and purity, against a background of embossed texture.

Each coin comes in an original gift case with a variety of coin presentation combinations in a limited edition of only 100 pieces for the entire world! The certificate of authenticity is placed in a special drawer at the bottom of the etui.

Charles Edenshaw

Charles Edenshaw (ca. 1839-1920) was an artist who became one of the most important guardians of Haida culture. He assisted scholars of his time in understanding Haida characters and stories. By the 1890s he was known among collectors and anthropologists as the greatest living Haida carver.

He created monumental works such as totems and other artifacts. He became an inspiration to subsequent generations of Haida artists (James Hart, Bill Reid, and Robert Davidson). One of his most famous works, the Argillite Chest, is now housed in a museum in Vancouver.
