Detailed description
Mask of Tutankhamun 1922 - 2022
The exclusive silver coin issued by the State of Djibouti for 2022 weighing 3 Oz in the purest 99.9% silver with Antique Standard finish and minted with special 3D technology, is released on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, the most important ancient Egyptian excavation.
The reverse side of the coin features a detailed 3D embossing of the death mask that was removed from the mummy of Pharaoh Tutankhamun and is currently on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
It depicts the modified form of the young king with his eyes open. The face is framed by the regal headdress of Nemes, which is complemented on the forehead by the emblems of Upper and Lower Egypt, a cobra and a vulture. An elaborate artificial beard is another symbol of power.
The coin offers a faithful interpretation of the craftsmanship of the original, supported by a patinated surface.
The discovery of Pharaoh Tutankhamun's tomb was made in the Valley of the Kings on 4 November 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter. The significance of the find was immediately apparent when it was discovered that the seals of the guardians of the burial chamber were intact at the entrance.
Carter and his patron Lord Carnarvon entered the 3,300-year-old sealed tomb on 26 November 1922. It was subsequently confirmed that the grave robbers had never penetrated the burial chamber and two other rooms. As a result, the sarcophagus and the rich burial equipment, which amazed the whole world, survived intact. The greatest amazement was the golden death mask, which became an iconic artefact of ancient Egypt.
Pharaoh Tutankhamun himself was one of the lesser rulers of the 18th dynasty known as the New Kingdom. He ascended the throne around 1353 BC at the age of 9. He died without heirs sometime around the age of 19, probably from an accident. Worldwide awareness of his life was brought about by the discovery of his tomb.
The obverse of the coin looks at the excavations in the Valley of the Kings and reveals the mystery of the tomb. The individual burial chambers and their archaeological treasures are visible. The view into the section of the burial chamber, which reveals the intricate way in which the mummy was placed, offers an amazing spectacle. The motif at the top of the coin is complemented by an inscription marking the anniversary of the discovery "100TH ANNIVERSARY TUTANKHAMUN TREASURY 1922", with the year of issue "2022" at the bottom edge of the coin. The small circle bears the national emblem of the Republic of Djibouti with the inscription "REPUBLIQUE DE DJIBOUTI", the face value "200 FRANCS" and the fineness and weight information.
The coin comes in its original box with the logo of the anniversary edition and the years "1922 - 2022". It includes a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1,922 pieces for the whole world!
