Detailed description
Tutankhamun's Tomb 1922 - Ultra High Relief - 3 oz
This unique silver gilt coin, issued by the Cook Islands State for 2022, weighs 3 Oz (93.3 g) of the purest 99.9% silver with an Antique Standard finish, and is struck in Ultra High Relief. The coin is issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and is the 8th issue in the "Archaeology and Symbolism" series.
The reverse of the coin features a gilded coloured mask of Tutankhamun in ultra-high relief in the centre. Surrounding the mask are various small hieroglyphs from the walls of Tutankhamun's tomb, as well as larger sculptures extracted from the paintings on the walls in the tomb and converted into 3D. The edge of the coin is complemented by inscriptions with the name of the coin "TUTANKHAMUN'S TOMB", the year of the discovery of the tomb "1922" and the year of issue "2022", divided into two separate parts.
Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered on 4 November 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The significance of the find was immediately apparent when it was discovered that the seals of the guardians of the burial chamber were intact at the entrance. The tomb contained a large number of valuable antiquities from the pharaoh's life.
Tutankhamun, also referred to as King Tut, was the last pharaoh in his family to rule during the 18th Dynasty in Upper and Lower Egypt. He ascended the throne at only eight (or nine) years old. Tutankhamun married his half-sister Ankhesenamun. During his reign, Tutankhamun restored the ancient Egyptian religion that his father had previously disbanded. Despite his achievements, Tutankhamun was severely disabled and is believed to have had many different health problems. The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb with its posthumous golden mask is considered one of the greatest and most important discoveries of the ancient Egyptians.
The obverse of the coin depicts a huge question mark covered in hieroglyphics. In the lower left corner is a coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS", the face value "20 DOLLARS" and the series name "ARCHEOLOGY & SYMBOLISM".
The coin comes in its original box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 99 pieces for the entire world!
Smartminting® is a revolutionary technology in the field of modern numismatics. The greatest advantage is the dramatic and unsurpassed heights of relief combined with intricate detail. High and ultra-high relief is possible on both sides of the coin, and the top of the relief can be placed as close to the edge as possible. However, the conventional embossing process not only requires more material (higher weight), but more importantly, the highest point must be concentrated in the center of the coin, which does not reach the same height as with Smartminting® technology. Another bonus of Smartminting® technology is the possibility of minting even in the highest Proof quality for coloured coins and, of course, the Antique Standard finish remains.
