Detailed description

1/2 Oz Gold Coin - Castle of Rabi

On the reverse side of the coin is again the motif of this largest ruin in Bohemia, this time a detailed view of the remains of the buildings accompanied by the text "RABÍ CASTLE", the year of mintage "2018" and the mintmark of the author Asamat Baltaev.

The obverse side of the gold coin depicts an aerial view of the castle grounds, during the conquest of which Jan Žižka lost his second eye in 1421. The relief is complemented by stylised heraldic animals from the great state emblem - the Czech lion, the Moravian eagle and the Silesian eagle in the right part of the coin field. On the left side of the obverse side is the text "CZECH REPUBLIC", the denomination of the coin "5 000 CZK", the name of the cycle "HRADY" and the mark of the Czech Mint that minted the coin.

Rabí Castle

Rabí is a ruin of a castle situated in the village of the same name on an elevated promontory above the Otava River at an altitude of 540 metres, about 8 kilometres northeast of Sušice.

Rabi_Castle

From the beginning of the 14th century, the fortress of the Lords of Velhartice stood on the site of the present castle. In June 1421 it was besieged and captured by the Hussites; Jan Žižka lost his other (right) eye during the siege. In the 15th century, the castle was extensively rebuilt and its fortifications were strengthened. A donjon was built in the middle with both residential and defensive functions, the total area of the castle (about 1 hectare, it is the largest castle in Bohemia) was divided into three parts that could be defended separately. In 1498 the castle chapel was completed.

The castle was plundered during the Thirty Years' War and burnt down in the 18th century. It has been partially renovated since 1920. Today it is open to the public and a small museum is located in the renovated premises. The castle is a national cultural monument.

The oldest part of the castle, dating from after 1300, is a massive prismatic tower with a narrow parkland and an outer railing. At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, other residential and farm buildings were built, and a fortified second forecourt was added. Lastly, an extensive artillery fortification with bastions was built.
