Detailed description
1/2 Oz Gold Coin - Veveri Castle
The reverse side of the coin depicts the castle core from the ceiling. The text "VEVEŘÍ CASTLE" appears at the top edge of the coin. The year of mintage "2019" is placed under the bridge arch. The mark of the author of the coin, Asamat Baltaev, DiS., is located behind the text "HRAD VEVEŘÍ".
The obverse side of the coin depicts the castle courtyard through the door portal. In the right part of the portal, stylized heraldic animals from the great state emblem are incorporated, namely the Czech lion, the Moravian eagle and the Silesian eagle. Above the portal there is a stone slab in the centre with the embossed coat of arms of Sigismund of Tiefenbach and on the sides with the coats of arms of Bohunka of Žerotín and Katerina Meziříčská of Lomnice. The text 'CZECH REPUBLIC' appears in the left part of the coin field, next to which is the denomination of the coin with the abbreviation of the monetary unit '5 000 CZK'. The mark of the Czech Mint, which consists of a composition of the letters 'Č' and 'M', is placed in the lower part of the coin field.
Veveří Castle is located in the west of the Brno district of Bystrc, about 12 kilometres northwest of the centre of Brno on a rocky promontory above the Brno Dam, which is fed by the Svratka River. It is one of the largest and oldest castle complexes not only in Moravia, but also in the whole Czech Republic. The most beautiful views of the castle are offered to visitors from the deck of cruise boats passing under the castle on the surface of the Brno Dam.
A chapel of the Mother of God from the end of the 12th century is located at the side of the castle, at the approach road to the western entrance gate.
Since the first half of the 18th century, there has been a legend according to which Veveří Castle is one of several places where the treasure of 12 silver statues of the Apostles, originally from the booty brought to the Czech lands by Prince Břetislav I from his campaign to Poland (the transfer of the relics of St. Vojtěch) in 1039, is supposed to be hidden. According to the legend, the statues, allegedly hidden in the Porta Coeli monastery in Předklášteří near Tišnov, were tricked by Templar knights and transported to their castle Veveří on 4 August 1306 in Olomouc, just after the assassination of the last of the Přemyslid kings Wenceslaus III. The romantic legend was apparently created as an attempt to spice up the manor with a fashionable story about the treasure, and its author was probably one of the castle officials of the time.
Veveří was visited three times by Winston Churchill, then British Minister of Trade, at the invitation of the owner Baron Moritz Arnold De Forest-Bischoffsheim. He and his wife Clementine also spent part of their honeymoon in Europe here in 1908.
In the past, the castle was the administrative centre of the Vever manor (later Veversko-Ríčany manor) and also belonged to the cadastral territory of the municipality of Veverská Bítýška. The castle and its surroundings initially formed a separate cadastral territory of Veverská Bítýška I, which was administratively subordinated to the Brno Municipal Council after the annexation of Bystřec to Brno in 1960. During the radical cadastral reform of Brno carried out in the second half of the 1960s, the castle with almost the entire cadastre of Veverská Bítýška I was then added to the cadastral territory of Bystrc.
