Detailed description
Myths and Legends - Morgan le Fay 2024
A gold investment coin, minted by the British Royal Mint for 2024 in the finest 99.99% pure gold, weighing 1 Oz, released as part of the Myths and Legends series. The first three-part coin collection, dedicated to the legends of Robin Hood, is followed by a second three-part series drawing inspiration from Arthurian legends. Morgan was chosen for the third coin on this theme and the sixth coin in the series.
The reverse side of the coin depicts the witch Morgana as designed by illustrator David Lawrence. The character of the dark figure from the legends is expressed by her posture and hand gestures, evoking magic. The power of magic is indicated by the concentric circles on the background. The powerful position of the woman is also reflected in the period-styled clothing and the dagger behind her belt. Her head is adorned with a headdress with wings and a bird skull, her wrists with a bracelet with a coiled serpent of betrayal. The coin's motif is conceived in an inner circle against a background of fine decorative guilloche engraving. Parts of the image transition into the rim area of the coin, where they are accompanied by the name "MORGAN LE FAY", the weight and purity of the metal "1 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9" and the year of issue "2024".
Morgan is a prominent figure in the original and subsequent versions of the Arthurian legend. Over the centuries, Morgana's personality has changed in a similar way to many other central characters. She has transformed from a kind and gifted healer to a dark and powerful sorceress, but her connection to magic has remained constant. The English version of the name Morgan le Fay uses the French word for fairy, la fée, which corresponds to a character from the world of supernatural beings.
In certain narrative lines of the early Middle Ages, she shares a close relationship with the wizard Merlin, heals his battle wounds in Avalon, becomes his apprentice, and also becomes an acquirer of power. Later versions portray her as a mortal woman and, through their shared mother, also Arthur's half-sister. There are plots sparked by animosity towards Arthur, his wife Ginevra with her lover Lancelot and other knights of the Round Table. She plans a plot, uncovers the queen's adulterous relationship, and also magically seduces Arthur herself to have their joint son dethrone his father. The final reformation and reconciliation with Arthur disappears entirely in modern treatments, in which she remains a purely negative and evil sorceress.
The obverse bears the first coin portrait of Charles III designed by Martin Jennings. The description of the coin states "CHARLES III - D - G - REX - F - D" and the face value.
