Myths and Legends - King Arthur 2023
A gold investment coin, minted by the British Royal Mint in 2023 in the finest 99.99% pure gold, weighing 1 Oz, released as part of the Myths and Legends series. The first three-volume coin collection, dedicated to the legends of Robin Hood, is followed by a second three-volume part drawing inspiration from Arthurian legends. The mythical King Arthur was chosen for the opening coin on this theme and also the fourth coin of the entire series.
The reverse side of the coin, designed by illustrator David Lawrence, depicts the legendary King Arthur with the magical sword Excalibur in front of the walls of his residence, Camelot Castle. The motif of the coin is conceived in an inner circle against a background of fine decorative guilloche engraving. Parts of the image transition into the rim area of the coin, where they are accompanied by the name "KING ARTHUR", the weight and purity of the metal "1 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9" and the year of issue "2023".
King Arthur is a legendary ruler of Britain who, according to heroic epics, led an army to defend his country from the Saxons at the turn of the 5th and 6th centuries. Arthur was an example of courage, bravery and chivalric virtues who became an inspiration during the nation's difficult times. The romanticised hero was accompanied by the knight Lancelot, the wizard Merlin or his wife Guinevere. Arthur's protection and invulnerability in battle was provided by the sword Excalibur. The affairs of the kingdom were decided with his knights at the Round Table, a place where all were equal. The Round Table itself then revealed the truth of the Holy Grail to the company.
King Arthur is still an image of timeless values today, and the Arthurian legends remain a constant inspiration for literary and cinematic adaptations.
The obverse shows the last portrait of Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Jody Clark, the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the denomination "100 POUNDS". The coin's portrait of Elizabeth II may be replaced by a portrait of King Charles III with an appropriate caption.
