Detailed description

Australia's Coat of Arms 2023

A gold investment coin, minted by the Royal Australian Mint in 2023, in purity of the purest 99.99% gold, weighing 1 Oz, released as part of the Australia's Coat of Arms series. The third coin in the series is inspired by the coat of arms of the Australian state of Queensland.

The original design of the investment coins was created by Aaron Baggio, who developed the motif for the reverse and obverse of the coin. Each side of the coin features one of the shield-bearers in the current coat of arms of the Australian state of Queensland, with the distinctive Australian Crane also being the official bird of the state.

Queensland's state coat of arms is the oldest state coat of arms in Australia, granted to the then British colony by Queen Victoria in 1893. On the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II's reign in 1977, the coat of arms took on its current appearance. The shield-bearers became the brolga crane and the stag. The brolga, as the only native crane in Australia, represents the indigenous people. The Old World in England is symbolised by the stag, which is one of the traditional heraldic animals. Its selection is linked to Queen Victoria's gift of a herd of deer from the royal hunting grounds near London. The shield, divided into thirds, contains the heads of a bull and a ram facing each other in the upper gold field. A sheaf of wheat on a black background is placed to the lower left and the third red field shows a green mound with a crossed pick and shovel. A golden obelisk is displayed on a stone base at the top of the mound. The coat of arms is complemented by a helmet, flowing coverlets and a cross. The use of the symbol of the Maltese cross with the crown of St Edward is not entirely clear, but a connection with the military decoration of the Victoria Cross is assumed. The national motto 'AUDAX AT FIDELIS' ('Courageous but loyal') is indicated by the ribbon at the bottom of the coat of arms.

The reverse of the coin depicts the Australian crane, whose outstretched wings protect other heraldic figures included in the national coat of arms. The shield in this design contains the denomination "100 DOLLARS" with crossed tools that refer to copper and gold mining. The agricultural sector is represented by ears of wheat, a bull and a Merino ram. At the bottom, a scroll with the name of the state "QUEENSLAND" passes over the wing of the crane. The motif includes the artist's mark.

The obverse side of the coin is reserved for a majestic stag against a background of acanthus ornamentation, which are in fact heraldic draperies fluttering over a helmet. The national motto "AUDAX AT FIDELIS" ("Courageous but Faithful") and the weight and purity of the metal "1 OUNCE .9999 AU" are placed at the bottom edge of the coin. A Maltese cross with the crown of St. Edward is placed to the right of the coin, which is balanced on the other side by a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Jody Clark. The portrait is complemented by the inscription "ELIZABETH II", the years of reign of the monarch "1952 - 2022", the name of the state "AUSTRALIA" and the year of issue "2023".

The coin has the status of Australian legal tender and comes in a protective plastic capsule. The mintage is limited to just 5,000 pieces for the entire world!
