Wiener Philharmoniker
The Wiener Philharmoniker, the most popular European silver investment coin minted by the Austrian Mint MÜNZE Österreich AG, is one of the most sought-after coins today. Its mintage started in 2008. The coin is minted from high-purity 999/1000 silver and its precious metal value far exceeds its stated face value.
Thomas Pesendorfer, chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, designed the obverse and reverse for the new Wiener Philharmoniker gold investment coins in 1989. The following year they became the best-selling investment coins in Europe and the second best-selling in the world. The same motif was followed by silver investment coins in 2008 and platinum in 2016.
The obverse depicts the Great Organ in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, the seat of the Vienna Philharmonic, and the inscriptions "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" and the metal name "SILVER" below.
The reverse bears a selection of nine musical instruments of the symphony orchestra - four violins, a cello, bassoon, harp and horn. In the upper part of the coin the inscription "WIENER PHILHARMONIKER" is in the description, in the lower part there is the information about the weight of the metal "1 UNZE FEINSILBER", the year and issue and the nominal value.
