Detailed description

The Egyptian Relic - Sphinx of Hatshepsut

Issued by the Republic of Chad in 2019 and minted by the Scottsdale Mint in the finest 99.9% pure silver, this 5 Oz (155.52 g) silver coin with a hand-brushed antique finish is issued in The Egyptian Relic series. A sphinx bearing the likeness of the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut was chosen for the coin's motif.

The coin depicts Queen Hatshepsut on its reverse, who is depicted as a sphinx, the traditional ancient Egyptian way of immortalizing a pharaoh. The statue of the sphinx, with the queen's face, false beard and Nemes headdress, is placed against the backdrop of her funerary temple of Djoser-Jeser in Dera el-Bahri. The inscription 'SPHINX OF HATSEPSUT' appears at the bottom of the coin.
Queen Hatshepsut (1507 - 1458 BC) of the 18th Dynasty was the daughter of Pharaoh Thutmose I and the wife of her half-brother Thutmose II. After his death, she took over as regent for her stepson Thutmose III and later as pharaoh with co-regency powers. She emphasized the seriousness of her office on official occasions by wearing male clothing and an artificial beard. Hatshepsut is the second confirmed queen of Egypt and is said to have had more power than Cleopatra or Nefertiti. After her death, she was placed in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings and moved over the centuries to safety from grave robbers. She was discovered as an unknown mummy in 1881 and taken to the Egyptian Museum. It was only identified by DNA and dental molar tests in 2007. It was the most important Egyptological discovery since the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

The obverse side of the coin depicts the national emblem of the Republic of Chad surrounded by the inscriptions "REPUBLIQUE DU CHAD", weight, fineness, year of issue and face value.
