Detailed description
Six Decades of 007 - Bond Films of the 1980s
The 1 Oz (31.1g) silver investment coin, issued by the Royal British Mint for 2025 in 99.9% purest silver, is part of the "Six Decades of 007" series, which celebrates the unique phenomenon associated with the character of James Bond over seven issues. The third coin in the series is reminiscent of the Bond films of the 1980s.
The coin is an officially licensed product produced in collaboration with the James Bond film production company (EON Productions Limited and Danjaq). The mintage is limited to 100,000 pieces worldwide.
The coin's reverse reflects the next era of James Bond through the famous fighter from the 1983 film "Octopussy". The BD-5J light jet aircraft from the "Q" development division stands out especially for its miniature size and wings that can be folded up for compact storage. During a mission to destroy equipment at an air base in Latin America, this unarmed aircraft was intended to serve as an escape vehicle and was hidden in a mock horse box. After the mission went awry, Bond eluded his pursuers and used the BD-5J to guide a surface-to-air missile into an enemy equipment hangar, destroying the facility and its research. He subsequently escaped in the aircraft and, after crossing the border, landed at a run-down gas station where he nonchalantly asked for refueling. The coin's motif is complemented by the 007 logo, and the background represents the third decade of Bond films with a collage of all the 1980s titles, from which the name "OCTOPUSSY" stands out. The view of the central motif is framed by a view through the barrel of a gun, an integral part of any film introduction. The coin's name "Bond of the 1980s", the year of issue "2025" and the metal's purity and weight information are shown at the edge of the coin in the form of micro text, which also serves as a security feature.
James Bond is a legendary British secret service agent. Over six decades, he has undergone countless changes and developments with each actor, but his audience appeal remains constant. The concept of 007 transcends time and the hero's name is still associated with style, action and courage. Commemorating the Bond phenomenon is not only a celebration of one agent, but also a celebration of cinema and an iconic character that has become a distinct part of pop culture.
The obverse of the coin bears the first coin portrait of Charles III designed by Martin Jennings with the artist's initials ‘MJ’. The description of the coin states ‘CHARLES III - D - G - REX - F - D’ and the face value.
