Next Generation - Kookaburra 2020
Investment coins minted by the Australian Perth Mint are among the most popular coins in the world. In 2018, it launched a new Next Generation series to the investment metals market. Each issue in turn will feature a representative of a species of Australian wildlife with a theme expressing the arrival of a new generation - a cub and its mother. The investment coins are struck in 2 Oz (62.2 g) Piedfort double strength from the purest 99.99% silver. The representative of the third coin in the series, released in 2020, is the much-loved Australian kingfisher - the giant kingfisher, for which the name kookaburra, based on the language of the indigenous people, has become common.
The reverse of the coin depicts a female kingfisher protecting her young. The motif conveys the strong relationship between parents and offspring, holding them close during their first years of life. The background of the coin consists of micro-engraved radial lines serving as an aesthetic and protective element. The motif is complemented by the Perth Mint's "P" mint mark and the artist's initials.
The Australian kingfisher, properly called the giant kingfisher, is a stocky bird with a large head and thick bill growing up to 45 cm. Its brown and white plumage provides excellent camouflage in the treetops. It prefers eucalypt forests for nesting, but is also increasingly found in urban parks and gardens. Its characteristic distinctive call has earned it the nickname "Giggling Jack". Often the giggling call is initiated by an individual, joined by its family and then by other groups in the area. The result is a cacophony of laughter spreading out into the wider area, offering listeners a unique experience.
The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the initials "JC" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the denomination. The background of the coin contains micro-engraved radial lines.
