Next Generation - Crocodile 2019
Investment coins minted by the Australian Perth Mint are among the most popular coins in the world. In 2018, the company launched a new Next Generation series to the investment metals market. Each issue will successively feature a representative of an Australian wildlife species with a theme expressing the arrival of a new generation - a cub and its mother. The investment coins are struck in 2 Oz (62.2 g) Piedfort double strength from the purest 99.99% silver. The second coin of the series, released in 2019, is dedicated to the crocodile - a representative of large aquatic reptiles.
On its reverse, the coin depicts a baby crocodile on its mother's head, partially hidden under the water surface. The background of the coin consists of micro-engraved radial lines, which serve as an aesthetic and protective element. The motif is complemented by the Perth Mint's "P" mint mark and the artist's initials.
Two species of the crocodilian family live in Australia - the saltwater crocodile, currently the world's largest reptile, and the Johnston's crocodile, a freshwater species found along a wide swath of the coastline of northern Australia. Crocodiles can be said to be living fossils. The same group (Archosauria) also includes dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Many of their species have evolved and become extinct over nearly 280 million years. The crocodile as we know it today appeared about 83 million years ago and its body has changed very little since then.
The obverse, against a background of micro-engraved radial lines, bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the initials "JC" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the face value.
