Britannia and Liberty - 2024
The silver investment coin was minted by The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom in 2024, weighing 1 Oz in purity of the purest 99.9% silver. The design was created in collaboration with the US Mint and marks the first joint project between two of the world's most important mints. The mintage combines the iconic symbols of both nations - Britannia and Liberty - into one design.
The same reverse design was struck simultaneously by the US Mint's headquarters in Philadelphia for the silver medal issue.
The reverse design was created by Gordon Summers and Joseph Menna, chief engravers of the British Royal Mint and the US Mint, respectively. Each of the artists used their talents and experience to craft the image of a female allegory of their homeland. They chose diagonally arranged head details for both symbolic figures and combined them into a harmonious whole, so that neither icon would lose its own importance and gain dominance. Britannia of the island kingdom is depicted as a warrior with a Corinthian helmet and trident. American Liberty (Liberty) carries a flaming torch and her hair is decorated with stars. The rim of the coin lists the inscription "BRITANNIA AND LIBERTY", the year of issue "2024" and the fineness and weight of the metal.
The obverse of the coin bears the first coin portrait of Charles III designed by Martin Jennings. According to tradition, he is looking the opposite way to Elizabeth II in her coin portraits. The description of the coin states "CHARLES III - D - G - REX - F - D" and the face value. The initials of the designer "MJ" are included.
