Next Generation - Platypus 2021
Investment coins minted by the Australian Perth Mint are among the most popular coins in the world. In 2018, the company launched a new Next Generation series to the investment metal market. Each issue will successively introduce a representative of a species of Australian wildlife with a motif expressing the arrival of a new generation - a cub with its mother. The investment coins are struck in 2 Oz (62.2 g) Piedfort double strength from the purest 99.99% silver. The fourth coin in the series, released in 2021, features the platypus - a small endemic mammal.
The reverse of the coin depicts a baby and mother platypus underwater. The background of the coin consists of micro-engraved radial lines, which serve as an aesthetic and protective element. The motif is complemented by the Perth Mint's mint mark "P" and the artist's initials "MR".
The ptarmigan is an amphibious mammal endemic to eastern Australia. It belongs to the subclass Bird-footed, members of which are the only mammals to lay eggs in the nest. They live next to freshwater rivers and lakes where they create burrows for shelter and protection. The first specimen was caught in 1797 in a river near Sydney. Because of its unusual appearance (the tail of a beaver, the body of an otter, the beak of a duck, the legs with a swimming membrane, the movements of a reptile), it was initially thought by naturalists to be a hoax.
Keeping a platypus in captivity is very difficult and only a few Australian zoos meet the demanding conditions. The lack of suitable water and food, as well as the inability to raise the young outside their home country, is one of the reasons for the strict ban on the export of platypus from Australia.
The obverse, against a background of micro-engraved radial lines, bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the initials "JC" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the face value.
