Music Legends - Queen 1 Oz
Issued by the Royal British Mint in 2020, this 1 Oz silver coin with colour printing in the finest 99.9% pure Proof silver is part of the new Music Legends series celebrating iconic British artists. The inaugural coin in the series is dedicated to the band Queen, making their first appearance on a British coin. The design of this coin was officially approved by band members Roger Taylor and Brian May.
For the reverse side of the coin, British designer Chris Facey has created a motif expressing the equality of the band members, their authorship and contribution to the creative process. He composed the four musical instruments of the classical line-up into a compact whole. Small details are highlighted by colour printing. In the centre, he has placed a coloured logo of the band "QUEEN", which underlines the microphone with the top of the stand, characteristic of the frontman in live concerts. The keyboard refers to Freddie Mercury's Bechstein grand piano from the famous song Bohemian Rhapsody. Three surface-distinct keys mark its opening chords. The Red Special electric guitar was built by Brian Maye and his father when he was 16 years old. The wood comes from a 200 year old fireplace and Brian has played it for over 30 years on numerous recordings and concerts. Ludwig Roger Taylor's bass drum is adorned with the Queen emblem, as it was in the band's early days. John Deacon's electric bass is the same model that appeared in the 1978 video Don't Stop Me Now.
The rock band Queen was formed in London in the early 1970s and is one of the most famous British bands of all time.
For two decades, topping the charts, an unmistakable sound and live performances have earned them a special place in the pantheon of music legends. The line-up of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor lasted from 1971 until the singer's death in 1991. Their greatest hits include Bohemian Rhapsody (1975 ), Somebody to Love (1976), Radio Ga Ga (1984), I Want to Break Free (1984), We Are the Champions (1977) and many more.
The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D.", the denomination "2 POUNDS" and the year of issue "2020".
The coin comes in a Royal Mint gift box with a themed booklet and is limited to 7,500 pieces worldwide!
