Music Legends - The Spice Girls 1 Oz
A silver coin with a colour print, issued by the British Royal Mint for the year 2026, weighing 1 Oz (31.21 g) in the purity of the purest 99.9% silver in the highest quality Proof, is part of the Music Legends series, which celebrates iconic British artists. The thirteenth coin features one of the most successful girl groups of the 90s, the Spice Girls.
The coin was created in collaboration with the Spice Girls.
The design for the reverse of the coin was created by designer Ffion Gwillim, who was inspired by the debut single Wanabe and the debut album Spice, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The coloured design shows the outlines of the band members against a background of coloured windows, complemented by the stylistic signatures of each singer. The overall motif is dominated by the iconic, stylistically accurate name of the band "SPICE GIRLS".
The Spice Girls are one of the most successful girl bands of all time and had a major impact on the pop scene of the 90s. The group consisted of members Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham. Each of them had their own distinct personality, which was supported by a nickname and a specific style, thanks to which fans around the world could easily find their favorite. The band debuted in 1996 with the single Wannabe, which immediately became a global hit. The song reached the top of the charts in dozens of countries and started the phenomenon known as “Girl Power”. This slogan became a symbol of self-confidence, friendship and female strength, which resonated particularly with young listeners. The subsequent albums Spice and Spiceworld confirmed their huge success. The group sold millions of records, sold out concerts and became a literal cultural phenomenon. Their influence went beyond music. They set fashion trends, appeared in films and advertisements, and their image was instantly recognizable. Although the band gradually began to disintegrate at the peak of their popularity, their legacy endured. The Spice Girls reunited several times for special tours and performances, confirming that their music and message still have a strong place in pop culture. To this day, they are a symbol of an era and an inspiration for future generations of female musicians.
The obverse bears a portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with his initials “MJ”. The coin’s reverse bears the inscriptions “CHARLES III. D. G. REX.F.D.”, the face value “2 POUNDS” and the year of issue “2026”.
