Music Legends - David Bowie 1 Oz
Issued by the Royal British Mint in 2020, this 1 Oz silver coin with colour printing in the finest 99.9% pure Proof silver is part of the Music Legends series celebrating iconic British artists. The third coin features the innovator, visionary and icon of the British music scene, David Bowie, whose work has inspired generations of musicians.
The coin is unique in that it is the first coin from the British Royal Mint to feature a portrait of a pop culture figure. Portraits have previously been reserved for royalty and historical figures.
For the reverse of the coin, acclaimed British medallist Jody Clark has created a realistic portrait of David Bowie. The civilian likeness of the singer draws on the so-called "Berlin era". He lived and worked in West Berlin from 1976 to 1979, and three studio albums, Low, Heroes and Lodger, were recorded during this period.
The background of the coin incorporates iconic elements associated with this artist. A flash of colour printing technology crossed Bowie's face on the cover of his sixth studio album, 1973's Aladdin Sane. The theme of stars and space ran through the artwork of "Starman" from the first single Space Oddity to the last album Blackstar. The motif is complemented by the musician's name "BOWIE" and the artist's initials "JC". The edge of the coin bears the inscription "THE STARS ARE NEVER FAR AWAY".
Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and painter David Bowie was born in the London suburb of Brixton in 1947 as David Robert Jones. At the age of nineteen, he adopted the stage name David Bowie after the American adventurer and national hero James Bowie.
He recorded his first debut single, Space Oddity, in 1969. Over the next half-century, the musical chameleon continued to surprise his fans with his choice of themes, musical styles and, in the early days, extravagant costumes. With the first commercially successful album in 1972, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, the cult figure of Ziggy Stardust was born.
His hits include The Man Who Sold the World (1970), Life on Mars? (1971), Heroes (1977), Under the Pressure in collaboration with Queen (1981), China Girl (1983) and Blackstar (2016).
David Bowie died on 10 January 2016 at the age of 69 from liver cancer. The prestigious Rolling Stone magazine subsequently named him "The Greatest Rock Star of All Time".
The obverse features a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D.", the denomination information "2 POUNDS" and the year of issue "2020".
The coin comes in a Royal Mint gift box with a themed booklet and numbered certificate of authenticity, limited to 8,000 pieces worldwide!
