Michelangelo Buonarroti

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (March 6, 1475, Caprese - February 18, 1564, Rome) was one of the most famous representatives of the High Italian Renaissance and Mannerism. He was famous as a sculptor, architect and painter, but he also wrote poetry.

He was born the second of the five sons of Florentine Lodovico Di Leonardo Buonarroti Simoni (at that time podestà of Chiusi and Caprese) and Francesca di Neri di Miniato del Sera. In April 1488, his friend Francesco Granacci brought him to the art workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio. Michelangelo's father was opposed to his son learning to paint; he wanted him to become a merchant. But Domenico Ghirlandaio eventually managed to persuade him. The gifted 15-year-old soon came to the attention of the Medici ruler of Florence, Lorenzo the Magnificent, and brought him to the Medici palace, where the city's great artists, writers and scholars were meeting. Michelangelo then lived in the palace until Lorenzo's death in 1492 and was treated practically like a member of the family. The famous gardens of the Medici became his next artistic school.

Michelangelo was a brilliant artist, obsessed with the pursuit of perfection and the desire to prove himself the best. He possessed a rich imagination and fancy, and the form of his works was thought out before he began to work on them. On more than one occasion, therefore, he damaged a work with which he was not satisfied, because he could not produce it exactly as he had imagined. He took great care in choosing the stone. He often went to the mines in Carrara to select marble blocks, and often liked them personally. An exception was the statue of David. For his most famous sculpture, Michelangelo worked on a block of stone of inappropriate dimensions (5 m high, with a base of 1 x 1 m) with many blemishes and deposits, which had stood unused for 40 years in front of Florence Cathedral and which two sculptors had already attempted to reproduce unsuccessfully. The David, which Michelangelo completed after two and a half years of work in 1504, made its creator famous and ensured his immortality. The young sculptor became an acclaimed artist.

He lived alternately in Florence and Rome, initially working briefly in Bologna. He worked for the Medici and Florentine republics, the Renaissance popes and the most important church dignitaries, and became a wealthy man. He never married and had no children. Towards old age he wrote celebratory poems on male beauty, from which it is now inferred that he was homosexual or bisexual.

He is said to have been paid 900 gold ducats for a statue of David, more than Leonardo da Vinci earned in his lifetime.
