Jozef Kroner - 100th anniversary of his birth
This exclusive silver coin, issued by the National Bank of Slovakia and minted by the Kremnica Mint in 2024 in Proof quality and weighing 18 g, is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the national artist Josef Kroner.
The reverse side of the coin bears a portrait of Jozef Kroner, which is accompanied by the name "JOZEF KRONER" and the birth and death dates "1924" and "1998". The lower side bears the actor's autograph, including a drawing of a fish, which refers to the actor's hobby of fishing.
The obverse side is designed as a film strip, referring to the actor's theatrical and film career, with the film career represented by the character Ton Brtek from the film Shop on the Causeway. On the right side is the national emblem of the Slovak Republic with the year of issue "2024", which is complemented by the Kremnica Mint mark and the stylised initials of the author Tomáš Lamac, DiS. The name of the state "SLOVAKIA" is placed in the upper part of the coin, the denomination "10 EURO" in the lower part. The edge of the coin bears the inscription "SLOVAKIAN THEATRE AND FILM ACTOR - WRITER".
Jozef Kroner (20 March 1924 - 12 March 1998) was a Slovak actor who originally worked as a labourer in Trenčín. He worked in amateur theatre, then began working at the Army Theatre in Martina and from 1956 he worked in the drama department of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. Thanks to his approach to roles, he was one of the actors who are able to play various characters and at the same time to capture their depth. Although he played dozens of roles, his most famous ones include the lead role in the Oscar-winning film Shop on the Waterfront or the character of the old man Pagac in the comedy series Slovácko sa nesúdi. In 1967 he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist, in 1978 the title of National Artist and on 1 January 2018 he was awarded the Slovak state decoration Pribina Cross in memoriam.
