This exclusive silver coin, issued in Slovakia and minted by the Kremnica Mint in 2024 in Proof quality and weighing 18 g, is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Cardinal Jan Chrysostom Korec.
The reverse side of the coin bears the portrait of Jan Chryzostom Korc. The name 'JÁN CHRYZOSTEM KOREC' appears in the description from left to right, separated by a graphic mark from the years of his birth and death '1924 - 2015'. The text is framed by an open line. It includes the stylized initials of the author Mgr. art. by Petr Valach.
The obverse side of the coin is dominated by a composition of hands clasped in prayer, intertwined with the rosary, resting on an open book. In the background is a cross on which a crown of thorns is suspended. The central motif is complemented by a closed book and a ribbon with the Cardinal's personal motto 'UT OMNES UNUM SINT', which expresses the desire for the unity of all. On the left is the national emblem of the Slovak Republic. The name of the state "SLOVAKIA" with the year of issue "2024" are in the description at the upper edge of the coin. On the right, in two lines, is the face value "10 EURO", below it the Kremnica Mint mark and the stylized initials of the author Tomáš Lamac, DiS.
Ján Chryzostom Cardinal Korec (22 January 1924 - 24 October 2015) was born in Bošany. In 1939 he entered the Jesuits. After the liquidation of religious orders and monasteries, he was forced to retire to civilian life. He was secretly ordained a priest in 1950 and a bishop in 1951. However, he could not exercise his episcopal ministry publicly, so he worked as a laborer all the time. He spent several years in prison for his religious activities among students. In a wide range of his works he stood out as a great expert on the human soul. He produced mainly spiritual literature, but also works concerning the problems of religious life in Slovakia. In January 1990, he became rector of the Seminary of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Bratislava, and in February he was appointed bishop of Nitra. On 28 June 1991, Pope John Paul II appointed him a cardinal. He is buried in the Basilica of St. Emeram in Nitra Castle.
