Silver Commemorative Coin

Famous Explorers - Zheng He

An exclusive silver coin issued by the State of Niue in 2020 in high relief weighing 2 Oz (62.2 g) in purity of the purest 99.9% silver with an Antique Standard finish, this coin is part of the six-part Famous Explorers series to be issued annually. The Chinese admiral and diplomat Zheng He was chosen for the first coin.

The reverse of the coin depicts the famous explorer Zheng He on board the "Treasure Ship". The figure, dressed in traditional Chinese robes, is looking in the direction of the voyage, holding a map and a telescope. On the patinated surface in high relief, a hand-painted porcelain inlay depicting one of the Ming dynasty vases as part of the valuable gifts contrasts. The background depicts a small part of Zheng He's legendary fleet. The Chinese name '鄭和' is in a decorative border at the bottom of the motif and its transcription 'Zheng He' at the top.
Zheng He (1371 - 1433) was a Chinese seafarer and diplomat of the Muslim faith. He underwent castration at a young age so that he could receive a prestigious education as a eunuch in the Beijing palace.
In the service of the three emperors of the Ming dynasty, he made seven trading and diplomatic voyages to Southeast Asia, South India, Ceylon, the Persian Gulf and the coast of East Africa.
As admiral, he commanded a monumental fleet of up to 250 ships with a crew of 27,000 men. According to legend, some of the ships were of a size not even approached by the sailing ships built during the golden maritime era of the 18th and 19th centuries. The floating colossi with nine masts and displacements of up to 19 tons were said to be 130 metres long and 50 metres wide. Its largest coracles, laden with precious gifts and trade goods, were known as "treasure ships".
Zheng He is a revered hero in today's China, whose diplomatic expeditions contrast with the colonial incursions of Europeans in the 16th and 19th centuries.

The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II with the artist's initials and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE ISLANDS", the denomination and year of issue. It includes purity information and mint mark.

The coin comes in a wooden box with a themed cover and certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world!
