Big Five Asia 5 Oz Orangutan - High Relief

A unique silver coin issued by the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire for 2023, minted from the purest 99.9% silver and weighing 5 Oz (155.5 g), this coin is part of the Big Five Asia series. The third representative of the "Big Five Asia" is the orangutan.

The reverse of the coin depicts a detailed orangutan head emerging from the lush rainforest vegetation. The portrait is highlighted by the high relief technology and antique finish. The description includes the weight "5 OZ" .999 AG", the logo of the engraving workshop "P. De Greef", the year of issue "2023" and the designer's mark.
Orangutans (Pongo) live in the wild on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. They are highly intelligent animals that share 97% of their genes with humans. However, among primates, they are among the biggest loners. A female and her young scatter and share a common territory with other females and usually one male who mates with them. They devote their days to feeding and resting. In the evening they move to a new location where they prepare their nest for the night.
The body structure of orangutans is adapted to move in the branches of trees, where they spend up to 90% of their lives. Their arms are up to twice as long as their bodies, reaching a span of around 2 metres. Their black skin is covered with long rusty fur and their bare face with an occasional moustache. Males are characterized by distinctive cheek mounds that are attractive to females.
Orangutans are among the most endangered mammals in the world. The alarming decline in population is mainly due to illegal logging of the rainforests in which they live and feed in the treetops. Hunters, who sell the young for meat or as pets and kill their mothers, also play a role.

The obverse shows the national emblem of Côte d'Ivoire with the inscription 'REPUBLIQUE DE COTE D'IVOIRE', the year of issue '2023' and the face value '5000 FRANCS CFA'. The edge of the coin is numbered.
