Predators 3 Oz Lion - Double Sided High Relief

A unique silver coin issued by the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire for the year 2023 and minted in the purest 99.9% silver weighing 93.3 g (3 Oz) in Antique Standard design is released as part of the Predators series. The series, which is struck in high relief on both sides, is dedicated to wildlife. The fourth predator of the series is a lion.

On the reverse side of the coin, an elaborate sculptural form of the lion is achieved using High Relief embossing technology. The luxuriant mane and protruding fangs inspire respect and thus fulfil the image of the king of animals. The background of the coin depicts the African fauna with distinctive boabab trees. The motif is surrounded by the weight "3 OZ", the fineness "999 AG", the inscription "PREDATORS - LION" and the year of issue. The motif also includes the name of the Belgian manufacturer P. De Greef and the maker's mark.
The lion is a mammal of the Felidae family and the second largest feline after the tiger. In the wild, lions live to be 10-14 years old, but in captivity it can be as long as 20 years. Previously, lion populations were spread throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and even America. Today, they are found only in Africa and a few places in India. Lions show marked sexual dimorphism. The main and defining feature of male lions is their mane. Previously, scientists believed that the colour, shape and density of the mane could distinguish the different subspecies. The opposite is true. Colour and size depend mainly on the habitat. Lions that live in cooler environments (e.g., European and North American zoos) have denser and usually darker manes.

The obverse of the coin depicts the hunting strategy and unusually uses the same high relief embossing technology as on the reverse. A pride of lionesses pursues a springbok antelope, which attempts to escape with its characteristic long, high leaps. The national emblem of Côte d'Ivoire with the inscription 'REPUBLIQUE DE COTE D'IVOIRE', the year of issue '2023' and the denomination '5000 FRANCS CFA' are inscribed in the image. The edge of the coin is numbered and corresponds to the certificate.
