The specially shaped 3 Oz (93.3 g) silver coin issued by the State of Barbados for 2023 in the finest 99.9% silver purity and Antique Standard finish showcases the chameleon's amazing ability to change colour using innovative thermochromic enamel technology.
The reverse design defines the shape of the coin and features a colourful chameleon resting on a tree branch. The main parts of the body are filled with thermochromic enamel, which changes shade and brightness when the body temperature is reached.
The chameleon is one of the most remarkable representatives of the lizard group for its unique abilities. It can change its skin colour very quickly to express its emotions and general mood when interacting with other individuals or during courtship. When resting and lounging, it glows in bright green hues. When basking in the sun, it catches its rays with a brown tint. Males attract females to mate in a range of bright colours. If she feels threatened she will use dark shades of green, brown and black.
His eyesight can be considered an evolutionary miracle. Each eye works independently of the other. It can observe a very wide area up to a kilometer away. The chameleon's brain can evaluate two different images or one image viewed from two angles. The eyes only become synchronous when it spots prey, which it catches with a flick of its tongue.
