Detailed description
Jean Baptiste Gaspard Deburau - 200th anniversary of his birth
The obverse side of the coin is dominated by the large state emblem of the Czech Republic placed closer to the left edge of the coin. The name of the state 'CZECH REPUBLIC' is in an unsealed inscription at the upper edge of the coin. The face value of the coin, 200 CZK, is placed below the lower part of the state emblem.
The central motif on the reverse side of the coin is a figure of a seated mime with a rose in his right hand and his gaze turned towards a butterfly at the upper right edge of the coin. The text 'JEAN-BAPTISTE GASPARD DEBURAU' and the year '1796 and 1996' are placed in the description at the edge of the coin. The initial 'H' of the designer of the coin, the academic sculptor Jiří Harcuba, is incorporated at the edge of the coin on the left side by the hand with the rose. The mintage was carried out by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou, whose mark is placed on the obverse side of the coin to the right of the state emblem.
Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Deburau (alias Jan Kašpar Dvořák) (31 July 1796, Cologne - 17 June 1846, Paris) was a French mime and actor born in Bohemia, the most prominent representative of 19th century European pantomime.
In 1811 or 1812 he arrived in Paris (probably with part of his family), where he became a star in commedia dell'arte at the "Théâtre des Funambules" (Strange Theatre), located on the famous theatre street "Boulevard du crime". Despite the fact that characters such as the Silhouette of the Lover's Moon or the Silent Sufferer were captivating and charming, his performance of the famous Pierot was breathtaking. His exceptional performance was an inspiration and an unattainable ideal for the following decades, and the pantomime of the 1920s (M. Marceau, Ladislav Fialka) also returned to the legacy of his mastery, adopting not only his (already classic) etudes (e.g. The Pierot Statue) but also his scripts (The Ragman, Pierot in Africa).
J. G. Deburau was married, had 2 sons: Philippe Germain Anselme - a tightrope walker and Charles - a dancer, actor and mime.
Each silver coin is stored in a protective plastic capsule and placed in a dark blue box along with a certificate of authenticity from the CNB.
