This beautiful silver and partly gold-plated coin issued by the State of Niue for 2022 in the purest 99.9% silver weighing 5 Oz (155.5 g) in top proof quality offers an original take on the fierce life of the apex predators (Apex Predators) by depicting the battle of two age-old rivals - the dragon versus the tiger.
The reverse of the coin depicts the dramatic scene of the clash between the tiger and the Komodo raven. The beast sneaks up on the raven through a bamboo grove and tries to bite through the thick skin behind its neck in a lightning attack. Aware of the fateful moment, the raven tries to break free from the enemy's grasp so that he, in turn, can deliver the first venom-filled bite. The main animal motif is left in matte silver and contrasts effectively against the shiny gilded background.
The Komodo crow and the tiger, inhabiting the islands of Indonesia, pose a deadly threat to each other. If the tiger ambushes first, not even the scaly armoured skin can protect the varan from its sharp fangs. The raven, on the other hand, has venom glands in its lower jaw. After biting its prey, the raven patiently waits for the venom to take effect before it begins to feast. Their hunting strategy also differs. While the tiger actively seeks out its prey, the raven spends hours waiting for it to approach its immediate vicinity.
The obverse displays a portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Ian-Rank Broadley, the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE 2022", the denomination "TEN DOLLARS" and weight and purity information.
The coin comes in a deluxe wooden box along with a certificate of authenticity, the serial number of which is repeated on the edge of the coin. The mintage is limited to 500 pieces for the whole world!
